Short answer
Thin base layer, fine knit sweater or cardigan, trousers or a sweater dress with fleece lined tights, and low heel boots. Keep a coat, hat and gloves at school for outdoor duty, and change into indoor shoes if you walk in through snow. A scarf adds warmth that comes off in seconds.
Seven winter outfits
- Berry crew sweater over a collared shirt, charcoal trousers, chelsea or ankle boots.

The layer plan
Winter layering for a classroom day
| Layer | What | Comes off when |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Thin thermal top or tights | Rarely; choose thin ones |
| Middle | Sweater, knit top or dress | Never; this is the outfit |
| Top | Cardigan, blazer or quarter zip | The radiator kicks in |
| Accent | Scarf | Anytime |
| Outdoor | Coat, hat, gloves kept at school | Back inside |

Questions people ask
How do teachers stay warm on recess duty?
A thermal base layer under your normal outfit, a warm coat and hat kept at school, insulated boots, and gloves you can still use a whistle or radio with.
Can teachers wear boots in class?
Low heel ankle boots are business casual and fit most codes. If you walk in through snow, keep a pair of indoor shoes under your desk.
