Short answer
Chinos, a collared shirt (button-down or polo), a layer and loafers or leather sneakers. That passes most business casual codes. Add a knit blazer for strict codes and meetings; swap in dark jeans and a quarter zip on jeans days. A tie is rarely required for classroom teachers, but it is a common choice for interviews and some private schools.

What to skip
- Athletic shorts and gym wear outside PE. Policies such as Durand-Arkansaw School District list athletic clothing, shorts and T-shirts among the items staff should avoid.
- Hats indoors, which the same policy lists.
- Ripped or faded jeans, even on jeans days. Mesquite ISD guidelines allow jeans only with no tears, holes or signs of excessive wear.
- Hard dress shoes with no cushioning. They look right and hurt by lunch. See shoes for teachers.

Questions people ask
Do male teachers have to wear ties?
Rarely, in public schools. Most staff dress codes ask for business casual or professional dress and do not name ties. Some private and charter schools do require them, so check the staff handbook.
Can male teachers wear polos?
Usually yes. A polo counts as a collared shirt under most business casual codes. A plain, well fitting polo in a dark or neutral color looks more professional than a logo-heavy golf shirt.
Are sneakers OK for male teachers?
It depends on the code. Some policies ban athletic shoes, which is why plain leather sneakers or cushioned loafers are the safer daily choice. Where sneakers are allowed, cushioned walking shoes are easiest on long days.
