Short answer
Most staff dress codes ask for professional or business casual dress and ban a similar list: jeans (except on set days), T-shirts, athletic wear, shorts, flip-flops and beach footwear, hats, revealing clothing and anything ripped. Durand-Arkansaw School District in Wisconsin, for example, lists suggestive attire, blue jeans, T-shirts, athletic clothing, shorts, flip-flops, novelty buttons and baseball hats. Jeans rules vary most: some districts ban them, others allow them on Fridays or spirit days.

Questions people ask
Is there a standard teacher dress code?
No. Each district or school sets its own. Many are short and general ("professional"), and some spell out allowed and banned items.
Where do I find my school’s dress code?
Search the district website for the board policy manual (look for staff, personnel, or employee dress and grooming) and read the staff handbook. Your principal or union representative can tell you how it is applied.
Can teachers have tattoos and piercings?
Policies vary. Some ask staff to cover tattoos or limit visible piercings; many say nothing. Check your district policy and handbook.
Do dress codes apply on work days without students?
Often they relax. Mesquite ISD, for example, allows jeans on staff development days and work days.
