Short answer
Build around pull-on stretch pants or a midi dress with pockets, a long open cardigan, and supportive flats or clogs. Look for ponte or bi-stretch fabric, an elastic back or full elastic waist, sleeves with some stretch so you can reach the top of a board, and dress lengths below the knee. Wear bike shorts or anti-chafe shorts under dresses and skirts on long days.
Six outfits
Plus size teacher outfit formulas (our styling suggestions)
| Outfit | Shoes | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Midi wrap dress, long cardigan | Flats with arch support | Adjustable waist, covers you when you bend |
| Pull-on ponte pants, tunic length blouse | Loafers | No zipper to dig in when you sit |
| Wide leg trousers, fitted knit top, open blazer | Clogs | Long vertical lines, room to move |
| Midi skirt with elastic back, tucked tee, cardigan | Flats | Waist definition without a stiff band |
| Pinafore jumper over a long sleeve tee | Sneakers | Easy for preschool floor time |
| Dark jeans with stretch, button-down, long cardigan | Ankle boots | Jeans days |
Fit checks for a classroom
- The reach test: lift both arms as if writing at the top of the board. If the top rides up past your waistband, go longer or size up.
- The crouch test: squat as if helping at a low desk. Pants should not pull at the back waist; skirts should still cover your knees.
- Pockets: deep enough for a phone or a clicker, so you are not carrying them.
- Chafing: under dresses and skirts, a pair of bike or slip shorts prevents it on long standing days.
